In corporate American and in the business world, we often hear this comment about some youths: They are very smart and technically competent, BUT lack the leadership quality.

This course will introduce the various skills and traits of leadership to prepare the students for the future world.  The emphasis will be on real life examples so the students can appreciate and understand why leadership is so essential in their studies and future careers. 

The following topics will be taught and discussed:

    1. What is leadership and why it is an essential soft skills to complement the hard technical skills?
    2. Who are your role models and why do you think they are so successful?
    3. What are the traits of successful leaders?
    4. How well do you know yourself? What are your current strengths and weaknesses?
    5. Do you know how to manage yourself, your emotions, mood, and behavior?
    6. Have you ever lead a team? What is it like?
    7. Have you been exposed to and learned the following skills?
       (communication, goal setting, conflict resolution, negotiation, strategic planning, team building, motivation, crisis management, value creation, promotion and marketing, public relation, etc..)
    8. Who are in your network of buddies, supporters, coaches, and mentors?
    9. Do you have a learning and self-improvement plan in place?
    10. Do you have a resume in place to capture your soft and hard skills?

The course will consist of 10 lectures and workshops. Each session will last 90 minutes, with a mix of lectures and group discussions. The course will be very interactive. Students will be asked to bring up topics, questions, experiences, and ideas for discussion.

Dr. Jamie Hsu

Dr. Jamie Hsu is Executive-in-Residence at Lawrence Tech Univ, specializing in strategic management, leadership development, technology management, innovation, and global collaboration. He has taught various EMBA, MBA, and Leadership courses.

Prior to his current role, he served as Executive Directors of GM Global Technology Management, R&D Centers, and Advanced Manufacturing Center.

Dr. Hsu earned his Ph.D. and M.S. in Solid Mechanics from Brown University, and B. S. in Civil Engineering from National Taiwan University

He has served as leaders and advisors in many civic and technical organizations such as

  • Chair, Michigan Asian Pacific American Affairs Commission (MAPAAC)
  • Advisor to CEO of a Chinese auto company
  • Advisor to Ministry of Economic Affairs
  • Board Member, Asian Pacific American Chamber of Commerce (APACC)
