2022 Fall - Finding Your Persuasive Voice (Middle School)

This course teaches students the art of argumentation through instruction about debate, public speaking, research, and argumentative writing. In addition to these technical skills, students will engage in thoughtful discussion about important topics that encourage students to vocalize their opinions with compassion, empathy, and confidence. 

The objective of this course is to be able to engage in civic discourse in any setting and communicate ideas effectively, using skills unique to each student’s individuality

Weeks 1 & 2 Advanced Debate Tips & Best Practices

Weeks 3 & 4 Public Speaking Tips & Best Practices

Weeks 5 & 6 Writing an Argumentative Speech

Week 7 Performing a Speech

Week 8 & 9 Engaging in a Live Debate

Week 10 & 11 Putting it all Together: A series of live debate rounds, instruction on giving peer feedback, tournament settings and expectations

Mrs. Courtney Bassett

Mrs. Bassett is a career educator and public speaking coach. For over 20 years, Mrs. Bassett has participated in Michigan’s competitive public speaking and debate community as a competitor, judge, or coach. Currently, she runs an enrichment program at a middle school where she works to connect the school with the surrounding community through STEM and Arts education. She also works as a technical writing editor for an online magazine, coaches a middle and high school debate and public speaking team, and is a musical theater director.
