2021 Winter – Public Speaking for Middle Schoolers

Public speaking is essential to one’s growth in our society. People must be able to get their message across to others.

Unfortunately, according to the Book of Lists, public speaking ranks as the number one thing people fear the most, above even death.

It is important for students to begin their exploration of public speaking in middle school. Middle school is a time where students should explore new opportunities. The anxiety that adults experience is much less prevalent with middle school students. Studies have shown that it only gets harder to overcome the longer one waits.

This class will focus on basic speaking skills; both how to present to an audience, and how to craft an effective message for your audience.

Skills covered will include:

  • Organizing a presentation
  • Posture
  • Stance
  • Eye contact
  • Presentational voice.

In addition, our current online environment brings with it many challenges that we do not face with in-person presentations. Predictions are that even after the pandemic, virtual meetings/classes will become more prevalent.  While students may know how to technically access online platforms, they have not been taught how to best present themselves in an online environment. For middle school students, they need to be prepared with the skills to effectively utilize the online environment in preparation for the rigors of high school.
